the only positive of Aqua dying is that the stupid, shoehorned relationship with Kana will never happen, and i really hate her, so any misfortune that befalls her is a positive in my book

Which is why Author's struggle because, they have their own idea on how the series ends, then there is the idea provided by their Editor, then the Publisher's, and finally what the Readers and Fans might have.

Losing memories might be in a way better option, as his past life memories would be gone with it, and he can start a new life without the memories of his struggles.
This way Author can also avoid the Incest route stuff which many readers (atleast in the West) seems to hate on. As what's attracting Rudy to Aqua is his past life memories.

like really, Aka switched the focus of the series so many times, i was rooting for the incest route to be true just for the absurdity of it

i dont like it, and its bad, i have no problem admiting when something i like is bad
but maaaaaaaaan i dont like when a series is 70% good and fucks up in the end

And alot of the points are common for other series as well.
Authors usually go for the bait route, because they don't want to risk going a specific route and get hated.

Aka., the safest route is either no route or all route open, just to patch things up at the end, so nothing much left to hear.

I mean, for example while i haven't read/seen MHA series, i hear that a lot of people didn't like the fact that the Author did a time-skip, but kept MC single even-though apparently there was someone who liked him.
Even the pairing of Naruto & Hinata was sudden in the Manga, and people felt odd about it (i mean Hinata only had a one-sided crush on Naruto, but it never really was expressed to him that he understood it).

You really think Aka goes on social media "Oh, people don't like what I write. Ok I change everything" or what? I can assure you thats not how it goes. The basic story is usally planed out by chapter 1.
