I like Rei and the relationship they have. He's not a dick or self-centered or anything. It also doesn't seem like he's going to steal the girl or anything. He's just happy for his bro.

This was exactly what I was thinking while reading this chapter.

Rei seems to care for his younger brother and while he sees Youta as someone who can surpass him and is afraid to lose, he also seems to have this respect for Youta and it shows. He also wants to be the big brother that his little brother looks up to and is proud to say "hey that's my big brother!" to everyone around him. As I am the oldest sibling I don't see that as a bad thing, unless we find out later it is all just Rei being super petty, but I doubt it.

His comment about Houjou is interesting and I wonder if it comes from both a place of being a little sad because someone else lit the fire in his little brother and excitement because his little brother is coming out of his shell.

So far, this series has definitely gone different routes than I thought it would with some of the characters and I am excited to see where this goes.

I imagine the author, chuckle like a madman, while writting the scene with the fan "look, I'll play on the misunderstanding with this...and deliver a fatal goat blow with the reveal" He got us good.

I was so sure she was going to end up holding the wrong side of the fan, but it's nice she didn't hah. And yeah... Youta definitely would've won a proper head-to-head race. He was quite far behind and zoomed up to second with a photo finish ending. Had they started at the same time it wouldn't have even been close. So he still takes the loss, but in reality did actually win. It works. And regardless Houjou is there for him so he is even more the winner anyways. It's also pretty cute that his big brother is able to see what is happening too and is kind of teasing him about it a bit.

Has he ever really been an asshole to him though? He doesn't want his brother to surpass him which can lead to being a dick, but he never acts like one to him from what I've read and his reasons are to be a good old brother it seems. At worst he is just ignorant of how his brother is treated because of it, but the dude is oblivious as shown several times.

Had it been that she had it on the wrong side it would have been while she was just absentmindedly holding it BEFORE starting to cheer him on. Once she was cheering I can't see her holding it the wrong way because I think she knows how he feels with his brother stuff. She may not know the whole situation and circumstances, but she at least knows his feelings.

I mean, I don't read every comment but I didn't see THAT much hate. He also isn't an asshole out of jealousy- you didn't properly read if you think that is the case, sorry.

As for the family, do they deserve some flame for (even if not on purpose) fostering an environment that made him develop an inferiority complex and feel neglected? Absolutely. That is facts.
But we also got to know that while they aren't flawless saints they clearly improved and came to the competition to cheer for the both of them while showing how much they care about his relationships etc.

You're kinda ignoring ALL of the depth this manga offers- and it offers a ton more than many other romance manga tbh.
