Idk why people talking about rei like he's being unreasonable, societal pressure is a bitch and no matter how that perfect image of him was formed, he feels pressured to keep it up and not let people down. He also has no reassurance that anyone other than his family would like his actual personality since he doesn't drop the mask unless he's at home. Who knows how long he's been keeping it up, and who knows what caused him to try and improve his image in the first place, expectations will always be there and that'll always suck.

If I had to guess - he kinda sounds like an introvert, who masks really effectively. But, it drains his "social battery" having to do it the whole time at school each day, and once he's home he "unmasks" and turns into ...whatever that thing on the couch was in that one panel as he's just fully on empty.
I can be similarish on occasion - though I didn't strive to be a perfect, popular "10" at school or anything.

To me it sorta seems like his situation is a lot higher stakes because he's a fictional character in a world where attractiveness works differently than it does in real life?

Like in real life for every person who's considered super attractive there are a) a decent number of people who're considered similarly attractive and b) a ton of people who're like, "yeah I guess they look good," because they're into something completely different.

Meanwhile in this world it seems like a) he's considered significantly hotter than most dudes in existence and b) most girls in existence are in complete agreement about his hotness.

But, maybe he did it once or twice as a 1st year trying to make a good impression, people reacted favorably, he kept doing it, people made fan clubs, and now he's stuck in a cycle of "I've painted myself into the popular corner and I cannot get out".

Come to think of it I could see him being like MC: ruined by his formative experiences with girls. Picture this: he starts preschool and is initially just trying his best for regular reasons, immediately gets super popular and then one of his fangirls sees him doing something sloppy and is TOTALLY DEVASTATED. Or maybe she doesn't even fully catch him doing the sloppy thing, but it's super obvious that if he doesn't hide it and any other flaws she'll be TOTALLY DEVASTATED.

It's also worth noting that we hold him to a much higher standard than we would if he was depicted differently.

He's basically the opposite of a character who can win a lot of points for doing one (1) nice thing because they look super scary/mean, if he does one (1) mildly jerkish thing we'll think he's an enormous asshole.

Personally I sorta like him, probably because he reminds me of Yukino Miyazawa from Kare Kano except driven by worry instead of pride/greed 😅

then the entire premise of this series falls on its face.

the MC already thinks every girl he's ever met is only talking to him to use him to get to Rei. If Houjou does it as well, then there's no resolution to his character arc - and that still applies if it's Rei going after Houjou on his own - and the actual narrative of the story centered around MC might as well not exist at all, at that point.

Besides, your phrasing implies that Houjou would just go along with it in that hypothetical - and there's zero indication she's that kind of person, either.

This isn't an NTR doujin, after all.
