I think it’s more or less the prospect of a reveal. We built up the suspense the entire chapter only to not getting to see what caused it, like telling a joke without the punchline. I personally don’t mind if the protagonist die or escape, I just want to see what’s causing the events.It's interesting how the satisfaction of the reader's curiosity often necessarily comes at the direct cost of the protagonist's health. Here we see the opposite trade made: the protagonist chooses not to learn what's going on, and in so doing preserves themselves. We as readers must decide whether this trade-off is in our favor, whether the protagonist has enough pathos that we feel good about them being kept alive and healthy, at the expense of a satisfying catharsis
