"Hey, what are you doing her...oh not again! Excuse me, miss, did you happen to see a creepy looking person around here? Used to live here before he got his land taken by the banks but after that he kept coming here and nailing those cursed dolls there.."
- Police Officer who got the short straw and had to remove the damn dolls every day

CCC took your health away~

This kind of stuff is why you pack atleast a long knife, whenever you go camping.
Also just 10k klicks and you are a camper? How new is that car?

So the man here appears to have been performing the infamous Ox Hour Shrine Visit Ritual (Ushi no Koku Mairi):
To perform an Ushi no Koku Mairi, you first make a straw doll (藁人形; waraningyo) to serve as an effigy of the person you want to curse. For the best effect, the doll should have some part of the person in it, some hair, skin, blood, fingernails, or other DNA. In a pinch a photograph will do, or even their name written on a piece of paper. This done, you done the ritual costume, and sneak into a shrine late at night. Many Shinto shrines have sacred trees, called shinboku, that are the homes of kami spirits. Nail the doll to the sacred tree using long, iron spikes called gosunkugi (五寸釘).

As stated in the name, the timing is very important. The ritual can only be completed at the Hour of the Ox, between 1-3 A.M. in the ancient method of counting time in Japan. The Hour of the Ox is the traditional Witching Hour in Japan, a time when yurei and yokai and other evil spirits come haunting.

And most importantly—the ritual must be done in secret; it is said that if anyone sees you performing Ushi no Koku Mairi, the curse will rebound on the caster. Unless, of course, the eyewitness is immediately slain.

How many times you perform the ritual vary; some say that you must go back seven nights, pounding in a single nail each night. The final nail goes into the head, which will kill the cursed person. The results of the curse vary as well—some say the cursed person will sicken and die. Some say that, like a Voodoo doll, the cursed person will feel pain where the spikes are hammered in. Some say it is a summoning ritual, and that performing an Ushi no Koku Mairi summons a vengeful spirit to torment and ultimately destroy the recipient.
This explains why the time of night (1:38 A.M.) was such a prominent element of the story. It also gives context for why the man was interested if the girl, Natsume, kept her camera recording all night and immediately questioned if she had seen anything when she encountered him upon waking up (if she had observed him performing the rites, the curse would have rebounded back to him). That she/we avoided witnessing him conducting the ceremony is also most likely why we never saw him wearing the crown of lit candles often classically depicted with the practice.

Another point of interest is Natsume was originally awoken by intense stomach pain in the dead of night and only afterward on the next day (pg. 14) does she/we see where a single nail had been driven right into the abdominal area of the straw doll with Natsume's name affixed to it compared with the others.

The fact she stayed there is the craziest part to me. Absolutely everything that guy said gave off red flags. Even if this wasn't a horror manga with supernatural threats, I'd still question how she's survived that long.

In fairness a lot of content creators aren't known for their overabundance of common sense.
Also think of all the missed views and subs!

so in other words, natsume could still hide and watch (or set a camera?) for the next nails (next night) to counter it? (unless he directly kill her ofc)

This is why you don't give strangers personal information

"My story about this creepy guy at X forest" would def get some views lol

(i do remember listening to a podcast where they covered brief 'car/camping horror' stories lol, other than running outta gas or a ghost at least in a car you're relatively safe and can drive off)
