I don't know if I'd call it out of character; Leon's a weird dude. He basically combines untreated clinical depression with a short temper and an exceptional talent for violence.

Leon's brain seems to work on a coin toss between "Not My Problem" and "Fuck Those Guys," with the coin toss being significantly weighted towards "Fuck Those Guys" once pretty girls are at risk.

He had no problem with appearing meek from the very beggining, he planned to live as a mob, remember? The only time he started to abandon that in the original story, was when things began crumbling around him due to Marie's actions. As for acting earlier, who would you rather risk the plan falling through when they are abused - some dude, or a well endowed heroine who seems fond of you?

There are some moments. I don't think it's a problem. If anything I wonder how people were expecting a throuple to survive without some cringe-worthy drama, unless all members are attracted to one another.

From what we've read so far, it doesn't seem like it. I think it was probably a national thing, based on how it came to be in the previous manga, but I could be wrong.

As previous posters mentioned, that was uniquely an Holfort thing and even then, just a guise. Do notice, that they still have a king and the women's "superiority" did not apply to the upper echelons of power, like the Redgrave Duke and palace nobles. Basically it was a scheme by the royal family to erode the influence of the fuedal lords, which there were many and they were viewd as a threat to the royals authority - they were the ones with the resources to field armies, like in IRL fuedalism. The royals wanted to gradually replace them with professional solders made up of commoners and transition from fuedalism to absolute monarchy. Also pretty much how it happened IRL (minus the supposed matriarchy gambit, of course).
