Is it really that surprising? Getting visa to use for most “western” counties is super easy and can be done like a day before departure through internet and I don’t think plane tickets would be that expensive, I flew to japan from Europe last year so way further than japan California for 600$ return tickets and sure that’s not cheap but it’s not that expensive
