That is one of the many things I don't like about Japanese culture (as portrayed in manga)... How they always feel compelled to be on an even balance of reciprocation of favours/affection/gifts. I like the idea that neither party wishes to appear to be taking advantage of the other, but it always comes across as if they keep balance sheets and panic if one person is more generous than the other. How many times have we all heard "But, you have already given me too much already..." Do they not comprehend that appreciation is often payment enough in return? I mean, in this case, he probably really enjoyed winning them, and it is not as if she asked for any gifts. It all strikes me as being ungrateful. As others have pointed out above, she does all the cooking, these things balance themselves out.
