Frankly the ecchi here sucks, it looks like some porn parody with gallons of fake sperm pussy juice spilled everywhere. The remaining mysteries of the plot, and Leigh-Mary, even (or in a way even more) as a pig, are the only two reasons I still read that.

What are they supposed to do if they don't exactly know how to kill the Empress yet? Might as well do a side quest (and the "right-handed" village girls 😏) first.

Though admittedly, it's awfully convenient that the village girls found them doing the deed.

This is pretty normal for the art to change during such a long series. Look at Shaman King or Bleach. The characters and art look totally different between start and finish. Or to take Okamoto as example, look at the start and end of Elfen lied and how much his art changed.
