Wouldn't the fire mage be better choice against siege towers...

Yeah, fire magic should be pretty efficient there, unless it's raining so hard it's instantly killing all the flames. Perhaps there's also a concern of her running out of mana too soon?

Han's party already trained their own formation for a long time. They could lend away Yvolka, but that means no synergy between her and the city defense (especially as it is insinuated that she basically goes burn-all friendly fire style with her spells).

Han probably decided to bring the tank along with him to break through and reach the dam faster rather than stalling the city walls longer.

It really feels like they split the two parties to the wrong targets.
Han's party has an archer, a spear and a powerful mage, all great picks for defending walls.
Edith's team is all melee and with a thief and a guard both 3 stars, they are an amazing choice for quick movement to a target and great at defending.

But story wise Han has the better overall team and needs to do the more story like part of the quest.
