I don't recall anything about him being unable to buff the other 2, the issue was that he couldn't buff himself and only Athena relied on the buffs since the other 2 were smurfing it. Looking at Chapter 2 it seems like Elf was getting accuracy buffs from Est but Daru knew she could adjust.

I might be remembering that part wrong then, all I remember for sure is that Est was dead because they had to waste time protecting him

I have said this before, but the lack of Daru in these chapters does make it more tolerable.
Still bad, but much better.
