Genuinely wondering, and forgive me if this is a dumb or culturally insensitive question, but might this be a cultural thing? I'm an American (;_; ) but I've heard that in Chinese and Japanese culture public displays of affection are considered a little more gauche than they are in my country, like its not as common to see couples kissing out and about. Is this not so? Sorry again for being dum.

For China I don't know at all, but yeah in Japan you don't really see couples kissing each other in the street, but I'm sure they do a lot of things.
I think in Korea it's kinda similar but I saw more people kissing in Korea so Idk, if someone else have a better answer I'm also interested.

Y'all in wonder at him freaking out are also forgetting two things: They've known each other for only a short while, and just started dating, so the dating stage of their relationship is where they'd be more about figuring out who each other is and what they like and other such compatibilities, while enjoying each others' company. Secondly, our MC is a herbivore AND an asocial shut-in; it's part of why we love our FMC teasing him and making him over-react!

As for the people asking about public displays of affection: Not too long ago, even in America it was viewed poorly. It's been only a very recent change (and that really only in some places) that it's seen with general nonchalance; in others it's more of a, "keep your nose to yourself" situation, where it is looked down on, but the average person isn't going to say anything about it publically, though sure as shit they're gonna gossip about it.

Based on things that I've seen, Japanese (more Asian Cultures generally) tend to hide public "shows" of emotion. If you do show it, it's in the privacy of your home(s). I've seen manga/anime/games where this seems to be an outlet for these cultures. As in, they let their characters do all the emoting they are holding back in public. Just an educated guess on some observations.

some haunted house have an escape room style that required you to do certain things while being chased by the "killer". that way you cant just keep running and breeze through the house itself.
