Surnames or family-names are indirect, they're formal, treated as part of not of a parson but group one is from.

Given name or first name is your personal matter, it's your own identity.

You usually call someone not familiar Mr./Mrs. Smith for instance, but try calling them by name...

Isn't it like that basically everywhere?
