I came in with lower expectations, but MAN I was wrong. This is a phenomenal work that should be talked about far more often!
Both of the main characters are fantastic in their depth and growth in the series, but every character is amazing in their own right. Shibata is a very stupid girl that has had one of the roughest nontragic lives, but she keeps moving forward. Watching her struggle with her weakness and find happiness is as equally entertaining as her natural silliness and expressions. Of course Shunin/Kurosawa is the perfect counter to her character, as he is able to keep up with her jokes and support her any time she needs it. He is strong, but he is not perfect. Their interactions had me laughing constantly, but the heartfelt moments were just as strong. Even then, every character was great and I loved all of them (even the one I love to hate). The interactions and conversations really made this world feel alive.
The story is rather simple, which is very fitting for the slice of life setting. What makes it interesting is the ages of the characters. This isn't a struggling teen or even college student; this is a group around their 30s starting over after life had its way. There is so much comedy that the hard and scary moments really hit. The conflicts don't linger too long, and they feel very much real.
10/10 If you like slice of life with adults, then PLEASE read this. It is a wonderful tale of fighting for happiness in a world that will take advantage of anyone willing to allow it and finding those that one can depend on in times of need. It is a long series, as each chapter is 40-50 pages, but it is worth EVERY moment. This is one of the greats that was somehow missed, and it's a damn shame.
