The announcement about the death threats on scanlators for no delays is disgusting and ridiculous. It shouldn't be a thing... But sadly, a thread in announcements won't be the end of it. I'm not sure if these threats were mostly made via mangadex's messages, but if they were, could we have a system to attempt to detect all private messages that might be death threats?

My idea would be to first trim and clean the message, run it against some patterns threat messages would have and put it in a To review list if its "threat score" is above a certain threshold and let a human have the final say on it. I'd let the message appear to be correctly sent but never send it to its recipient if it might be a death threat. It's not all that bad to have false positives, but false negatives are a problem so better safe than sorry

there is a "Block User" feature, but I don't see a report option

While the theory is that it would be good for the mental health of the people currently receiving the threat, in practice it's a type of censorship. The implementation of a system that's there specifically to block free speech would be a reason more than enough for me an probably many others to just abandon the site.

And maybe you should tag the one you are quoting.
For that I would have to have a minimal interest in what you may have to say.
Or are you maybe scared ;)
Or maybe I have so little respect for you that I don't care how you'll take me not tagging you :)

I agree with @Teasday and @DANDAN_THE_DANDAN; I think something like a "report" button is sufficient. No need to overcomplicate things.

Simple blacklists are generally not very good. e.g. see the Scunthorpe and Penistone problem.

Even more sophisticated flagging algorithms can have lots of flaws to them. e.g. Tumblr's recent porn censorbot can be circumvented by putting the image next to a 50% scale owl.

There are better bots out there that are used to flag spam and vandalism, e.g. Stack Overflow's Smoke Detector bot, or Wikipedia's ClueBot NG, or even just the various Wikipedia abuse filters, which are okay I guess. But those sites get wayyyyy more traffic than this one, so something like the suggested PM filter is just unnecessary for this site imo.

@BadWithNames

Could you please elaborate? "Lmao, fucking pathetic" doesn't say much, you see. I don't understand which part of my statement you disagree with, how could my position be changed in order to try to compromise. Neither do I see any argument against my position.
All I said was that a system implemented in order to censor messages by arbitrary criteria is absurd, no matter how good the intention behind it is. Eventually, it can be used to harass unrelated people, and it's just another tool for imposing the political view of the admin on the consumers (I'm not trying to say that the admin WILL or INTENDS to do it, I don't know their political stance nor I care about it. I'm trying to say it ALLOWS for such a thing). I do not wish to be part of a community which arbitrarily decides which words can or cannot be used in my personal messages. I don't think I'm being unreasonable here.
Also, I don't intend to start a chain discussion or a garbage fire here, so if you have any issue, hit me up with a PM, or we can sort things out in offtopic or something.

Sounds like a haphazard idea. Since this is primarily an English language site (with also other Western languages listed), the Western audience has to be the primary population of readership. Typical Western people aren't happy with censorship (as long as it's not blatantly illegal stuff, like CP), and especially not happy with the idea of innocents punished summarily for the sake of cathing a guilty one.

Ignore, Report, Ban. Those actions would seem more appropriate. At least as long as things aren't getting totally out of hand, which hopefully never happens.

If you want to protect yourself from inbreds with nothing better to do just block them. But options to Report and "allow PMs only from friends (and mods, etc)" would actually solve this problem before it even happens.

A report function is currently in the works. Also this suggestion, while well intentioned, will never be implemented.

The biggest reason being I'm too damn lazy to scan through the tons of PMs that people send. The second reason being that's a huge invasion of privacy. Pretty sure if we were a legit company that would cause a ton of lawsuits to be lobbed our way.
