That doesn't necessarily translate into her "not taking it well", though.

I could see a case where him getting a girlfriend would take up his time and the two of them wouldn't hang out often, but I'm not certain that would bother Sis all that much.

She wouldn't be able to drop by unannounced any more, but other than that sort of thing....?

Yes but the thing is she used him for ALL her emotional baggage. She might not notice it at first but she’ll eventually realize it when she’s frustrated or depressed and no one is there to listen to her. She doesn’t even go to her girlfriend but goes for her cousin instead for all her problems.

I'm also not convinced she can't, still.

The core of the problem for him is that he's got one-sided, unrequitted feelings for her, so her coming to him all the time was fucking him up specifically.

If he can fall for and enter a relationship with someone else (SharkTeeth) and develop a healthy detachment from his old crush on his cousin, then that turmoil he always felt would disappear.

He can interact with her from a better place, then, and thus still maintain a relationship--just not the currently untenable one he possesses.

Which, again--not really her fault. He chose to let her rely on him; he could have told her "no" at any time to spare his breaking heart, but decided "at least I get to see her this way" and enabled her through his tortured selfishness.
