Yeah, this is my thought as well. Japan has a huge (and sometimes shady) AV industry, so some yakuza producer might have managed to talk her into getting involved with a porn movie, yet she didn't realise it's that kind of movie until it was too late. So, she was basically raped, though "legally", in front of the camera, and ever since she hasn't been able to watch movies. Let's just hope she didn't actually get pregnant, leading to Akine, under such circumstances.

The mom's smiles have been eerie all the time, which is why I think it could really be as bad as it can get, and which is why she might even talk about it to a pretty much total stranger. She could be somewhat mentally unstable.
Are you not disappointed yet? Someone knows the reason for all of this- the author just decided to say it off screen because he couldn't think of it yet. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Akine's been able to watch movies up until she was 9.

Not particularly disappointed, since we don't yet know the reason. If someone said it in the comments, I might have purposefully missed it because I actively try to avoid spoilers, and thus when I sense people talking about infor from outside of the chapters translated so far, I get really carefully. That being said, I'm not expecting much. Yhis is the series where the senpai girl can list every video/movie a person has watched with 48 hours by licking the target person's skin, so this isn't exactly trying to be a serious story.

The thing about Akine being able to watch TV/movies until 9 years old, I'm not so sure about that. Maybe it was just a mistake by the author?

I don't know how you reconcile "This isn't trying to be a serious story" with "Well what if mom was 'raped' by Yakuza in a porno and got pregnant with Akine and now she's mentally unstable?" Also ignoring the fact that mom canonically watched John Wick: A movie that's so much younger than Akine, she could have watched it herself and remembered the experience.

This story presumably takes place in 2022, at the latest, John Wick came out in 2014, and Akine is only 15 right now; depending on the exact dates involved, Akine may have been anywhere from 7, to 9 years old. Possibly even 10, if this story happens even earlier than we assume.

It was just a theory from the top of my head, but I don't really expect it to be so because the story otherwise has so silly elements. So, I'd expect the real reason to be insignificant.

If it's a mistake by the author, then the release dates don't mean anything. The author just picks a movie he happens to like for a chapter, but didn't think about how it affects the perception of the timeline. A mistake, you know. In movies they are called goofs. But who knows. In my eyes, it certainly just felt like Akine was never allowed to watch them.

I can picture the author hunched over the script, going: "Wait, why did she ban her from movies? Crap, I can't think of anything."

Then their face just lights up. "I know!", they exclaim. "I'll make it a mysteryyyy!"

That's not what bothers me though. Well, it does bother me, but it does not make my blood boil. What does is that this lady seems to be thinking that she has to shield her fifteen-year-old, nearly adult daughter from the truth at all costs, so she spills it to a boy from her school who is the same age and can't possibly accomplish anything with this information. (Other than pass it on to her daughter, the one thing she specifically tells him not to do.) Either because boys don't experience trauma, or because he's not her kid so she doesn't care if he gets traumatized. And she insists on doing this even though her daughter already ran away from home because she can tell something's completely fucked.

You see, "the author wrote themselves into a corner and has to stall for time" is the charitable interpretation.

You know that's actually a great point. Yeah her mom is actually being really shitty here.

It sounds better than it actually is, because the timeline for this series has her becoming a teen mom, then either banning movies after Akine turns 9, or banning them from the start, and continuing to watch them herself.

Clearly her ex husband is a movie director or an actor and he divorced her for some stupid reason leaving her with a grudge

He's exploring the history now, and he's clearly forgotten a bunch of stuff, and he's making the plot holes he introduced WAY worse so far.

Her past gets touched on FIFTY ONE CHAPTERS LATER. Basically:
TL;DR: This story has MASSIVE plot holes, abandons its premise unceremoniously, doesn't solve the mystery it sets up, and the timeline doesn't make sense (Which is basically just the plot hole complaint again)

The author basically set up a big mystery, then kept playing off it to serve as an obstacle to our main cast. And it served that purpose wonderfully. But here's the problem: The author really likes movies. He likes to include real-life movies in the story, and that causes problems. Namely, that since the movies actually exist, you know roughly what period of time the characters are in, or talking about.

Which leads us to the next problem:

In chapters 11 and 16, the author had FMC's mom outed as a major movie nerd. Mom then went on a whole speech about how the movie Constantine, featuring Keanu Reeves (She's a huge fan) was a big part of her youth (Literally 青春/Seishun; roughly: Adolescence). She outright tells us that she saw this movie when she was her daughter's age. The problem? Her daughter is 15, Constantine came out in late 2005. She got the DVD mailed to her, so add even more time for shipping, handling, etc.. This story takes place in 2021, at the latest. Mom would need to get pregnant RIGHT THEN AND THERE, POSSIBLY VIA REEVE'S UNBRIDLED MANLINESS LEAKING INTO HER THROUGH THE DISK, if her child has any hope of being the canonical age of 15 the story set her as. But she doesn't. In fact, we know she doesn't for a while (More on that in a second). To boot, chapter 16 has her making a reference to John Wick, which came out in 2014, when her daughter was already 8-9 years old! So either she's banned her daughter from watching TV, movies, and using the internet while she sat around indulging, or movies were actually fine up until some point after John Wick, and FMC should have memories of watching TV, movies, and browsing the internet

Even if we're unreasonably generous, and assume the DVD she'd gotten mailed to her was actually THE MATRIX in 1999 (Which opens a whole other can of worms, since DVD players and DVD's were luxury goods, and nobody sold them via mail), that means all the events that happened in the next three years, which are presumably what the author is going to use to justify her problem with media, STILL wouldn't work, because these events would be happening around 2002, and Constantine, having come out in 2005, was explicitly established as a part of that "青春" (Youth/Adolescence). So despite everything we're seeing, she's not only still into movies, but she's so into them, she'll actually have her chuuni phase 6 years late because of how much she loved the latest release. And then, right the instant she has her late chuuni phase, she gets over it, then has her daughter like I described earlier. All while going on to watch John Wick when her daughter was 8-9.

Chapter 16 does us a double disservice by spending the whole time setting up the resolution to the mystery, and the series' whole premise right then and there... only to cut away when everything is explained, then never touching on it for 51 CHAPTERS! I'm serious. The story gets mom and MC in the same room, she literally sits down, gives a little preamble before explaining herself, then... we cut to the daughter, who is in the next room, who forgot to listen in. And then we cut back to the guy telling her that the explanation was entirely convincing, and he understands why she would go so far as to ban all media for her daughter.

The story then spends a couple more chapters rubbing it in our faces that he knows, and that the main conflict of the story's been resolved off screen, before moving on to focus on an entirely different girl.

51 chapters and TWO YEARS later, we finally get a flashback of the mother's youth in chapter 67. She's 17 here, has no kids, and joins a small talent agency. Stuff happens, things look hopeful, then we get a bit of mood whiplash where she's barely conscious, being kissed by some middle-aged man in some drinking party. You think "Oh, so this is the incident that made her hate movies". NOPE. Next chapter comes in, she's immediately saved, she learns her lesson, she graduates, then spends time working as an actress.

Enough time passes that she's over 18 now (She's 3 years too late to have a child that can be 15 years old in 2021). She's still an actress, she still doesn't hate media, and she's got a thick spine. Case in point: She's at an audition, and the people in charge are trying to get her to strip for them. They then invite her to a room in a casting couch situation for the role. She turns them down. Her friend ends up being cast at the end of the chapter, which obviously comes as a shock to her, but that's the latest I can access at the time of writing.

EDIT: New chapter comes out, and it turns out her friend's been sleeping with everyone to get the agency its business, despite said agency being made ostensibly to "protect women" from exactly this. Mom was the only one not in the loop. Then we finally cut back to the present day- with the events we just saw presumably being the explanation for her hatred of movies... that happened either in 2008 (Which makes her daughter too old), or 2002 (Which means she kept watching with cringey enthusiasm for YEARS afterward. Not to mention it means mom's age watching Constantine was retconned)).

I knew author could never deliver on the mystery of why she hates movies so much. But this is so fucking hilariously bad I don't have the words for it.

Like... It has fuck all to do with watching movies...

Thing is, the man didn't have to do this. He could easily have kept this problem in the background for however long he needed to make it make sense. Or hell, if he couldn't answer the question, he could just have made mom the antagonist of the series they have to hold out against until Akane turns old enough to move out. Wouldn't even be that hard. All the author would need is for mom to insist she'll "Tell her when she's an adult". Which would feed into Akane's complex about not even knowing what an adult is, and how she's falling behind because she's not watching the same kind of mature media her peers are. Hell, if he really wants to twist the knife, mom could use Akane's inability to deal with lewd stuff as the sign that she's not an adult yet... despite it being her own fault that her daughter's development's been hobbled.

BAM. We've put off the problem forever while keeping in line with the story's philosophical conflict.

Everything else can stay the same. Sensei crashes through the door, the increased scrutiny of the club leads them to notice that the club lacks sufficient members, or hasn't actually produced any results, so in comes sensei pawning off a new girl who'll either join the club, or offer them a project to do so she can cover her ass and keep being the absentee advisor. And off we go to the next arc.

I mean, it was pretty obvious that the explanation was going to be incredibly stupid and nonsensical, because, y'know, there is no such thing as a motivation for wanting to ban your daughter from watching ANY MOVIE that isn't incredibly stupid. Man, I dunno, this is a pattern I've seen in quite a lot of these manga where the author is a huge nerd for -something-, like movies, or barbecue, or high couture fashion, or Hokkaido, or whatever, and they end up wanting to make every single aspect of their manga all about this thing, including the interpersonal drama, which leads to these absurd plotlines where LIKING MOVIES is the thing that causes a rift in the family of the FL. Like, either leave this family drama out of the story entirely, or maybe don't make it all about your nerd fetish when it makes no sense.

I guess its the same thing as vegan parents not letting their kids eat meat because they dont support animal cruelty.
The mom learned that the movie industry is disgusting. Like seeing your friend in a movie, but remembering how they were sexually exploited to get in the movie.
So yeah meat is delicious and movies are fun, but the process of making it is something the parent doesn't tolerate anymore.

I see where you're coming from, but I think it just isn't a great analogy. If you eat meat, an animal has to die for that to happen. It may have happened under more or less cruel circumstances, but a death has occurred one way or another. However, while you could have bad feelings about, I dunno, the Hollywood movie industry, maybe (I dunno, who knows), but just the act of making a movie is such a neutral thing. Like, a movie could've been made by a bunch of friends for fun. Every country has their own variety of movie industries. It seems like nonsense to me to take offense to the act of watching movies in general, completely divorced from the context of how they were actually made, just because one time you tried to be an actress and had a bunch of bad experiences. It's not like it couldn't happen, in theory, but if it did it would be so stupid. As opposed to the veganism case, where while you can disagree with it, it at least makes logical sense.
