I wonder if this is a fake out cliffhanger with "We're not going to use her screen play" not because of anything nefarious, but because they're friends and his understanding is she doesn't like moves/has put no effort into the screen play (that he knows of) so he expects her to turn in effectively nothing and has made his own screenplay to be safe
