If you write a story you need some mechanics and gods work great for summoning people between worlds and gifting bullshit powers upon people. They have some serious shortcomings and implications as a writing device but they are valid enough.

In a game the hero wins because it's designed to have that outcome. The personality of the demon lord means nothing. I guess that could be what they mean by realist, applying realism to a stupid story. Though a lot of his complaints could be hand-waved away.
