To be fair the MC if that series tapped out a purple belt while still being a white belt but I see your point. The opponent should’ve been someone who wasn’t good enough to stay at a Khabib level team and got kicked out for not getting results and bad behavior.

Not someone who is number three in the world. That’s a rank you’re supposed to reserve for final boss NOT for a comeback fight. Red blue isn’t perfect in its realism but personally I’m cool with that.
I just think from the storytelling perspective that fight and the outcome did not lead anywhere.

Had the coach quickly lost it would have been super realistic but at the same time a bummer for the Shark gym since Aoba had just lost before.
But since the coach won, the main question for me is why he did not become a BOOST champion or even aim for the UFC during the timeskip. Coz if he could beat a top 3 UFC ranker after 3 years of inactivity (and fighting from such a small gym), he was a genius-level talent but with only 2-3 more years before the hard decline.
Yet we don't see much development after the timeskip, except "he won a couple more fights". Basically the coach got the ultimate side character treatment.

That's why for me this fight was like a big plot armor moment inserted only to motivate Aoba. The whole fight could have replaced with some slice of life moments where Aoba tries other activities, but then realizes that he loves MMA and regains his resolve.

Unlike so many other MMA manga. Probably the most realistic yet. It's not just a look at mma fighting, it's a look at an mma fighter's career
Lowkey the most realistic part of this manga is Aoba padding his resume fighting against bums in low level competition lol. Lesser manga would make their mc having a barn burning fights every step of their career for no reason.
