In the context of japanese household, It's actually pretty unusual, since the wife is the one usually in charge of household finance, and by that regard also the one giving allowance to their husband (Okuzai).

Common japanese household, the husband usually give their most if not entire earning to the wife and let her manage and budget their spending.

And in some toxic household like one my family friend once had, she also give allowance for her husband to "play" around, since according to large number of japanese population, if there monetary transaction, it's not consider cheating (which hit my family friend pretty hard since she's not a native japanese and grew up in different culture), but if it not a service with monetary gain in any kind, they will whole ass sue the cheating party to the last drop of alimony, regardless of if it a wife or husband.

But tangent aside, legally, japanese citizen can't have shared account, so husband would commonly give their paycheck to their wife account with his as the main legal owner of said fund as some bank do offer such arrangement, it hella roundabout the first time i were told lmao.

So that's maybe why he said he give them salary/allowance, since regardless of who manage the finance, the money is legally his
