With her probably knowing the etiquette of not insulting a woman's looks, and possibly having self image issues due to how the other prince treated her, it seems possible she is currently thinking that our prince thinks she is ugly with his current actions despite what he is saying out loud. With a negative mind set, I could see him appearing like he is trying to be polite while being revolted.
