I don't think the author can handle it well in the future story. NIKAIDO was rejected by the MC in Ch 22 and she also knew MC was dating HITOTSUBA. NIKAZDO also sees MC as a friend at the end of Ch 22. I don't know why the author would allow her to step in when a couple is in a peak scenario. I know wasting a good side character  is nonsense (especially she is another perfect girlfriend material.) but putting her in this situation and showing this reaction are also nonsense to me.

It might be that author is going to have her support MC to make it into the right college. Hoping that through this process MC is able to introduce her to her own love interest.

I'd be amazed if the author had a plan to make MC end up with Ai-chan.
