I think that's supposed to be the point (just happy-go-lucky dream story of sorts, with the pretense that he's "forced" into it to give a vague sense of tension), though it falls sideways for me. Their absolute lack of care or interest for what he thinks or wants would be both enraging and kind of terrifying to me if I were in his position—I would just about rather have gone with the friendly yakuza dude, and I feel it in my bones.

Yeah true man. Imagine some celebrity child comes to you and pays 5000000 dollars worth of debt for you and then tell you, you can't talk to your parents anymore (even if they are shit, they are still parents) and you will be the head of the company that we decided and your future wife is also decided to be the girl who's parents will adopt you after you're 18+.
Even worse, first thing she does is call you pooch and decide weather to make you her pet or not.
