Hilarious, when I told my mom I finally got a job, only part time, she said the exact same thing. Told me to start looking for a real job, because the part time was clearly temporary. And I take back my previous statement from the past chapter, it seems they were pretty supportive, I still hope they'll be accepting of their child's lesbian experience. Oh and wow, she has/had? friends, now I don't know if she's in a worse or better position than I am. And finally a fetish I can understand. MILF's are seriously under-represented in manga (not doujins), I don't get the japanese obsession with weird archetypes like tsundere, loli, and gyaru, I mean their obsession with high-school frankly strikes me as Unhealthy. I for one would be happy if I never had anything to do with a high school or anything related to a high school ever again.

@gevudan I think the high school obsession is because a lot of the target audience is in high school or started reading it when they where in high school, so the authors want to create something the readers can relate to on some level. Or at least that's what I understand from all the stuff I've looked at and been told from when I was an aspiring writer. It didn't work out, after being rejected so many times I just gave up, but after seeing this I might just try again.

This manga is scary, way too scary, there is only two difference between this character and me, she's a woman and the fact she clings to her mother. otherwise, this 99% my life, I began working part-time as a cashier, got some good jobs I couldn't keep, finally a very good paying job that I quit due to depression, and now I work part-time in a pizzeria, with good people I can't fill the gap between us, and it's a job that is killing my back and neck.

So... do I need to have lesbian sex to heal up? That might be why I like yuri so much...

This girl’s parents did an utter shit job at supporting their daughter, but at least they seemed to have no bad intentions and let her stay with them. Don’t know enough about them, but surely they should have picked up on their own daughter’s mental condition after she lived with them for years...?

I see what you mean, but i believe that Japanese values to tend to focus more on people getting a job, moving out, and getting a reliable source of income, essentially theres a lot larger stress on people becoming independent and self sufficient, so i guess its normal for her parents to be disappointed by her? not sure

There’s only 38 pages but the raw sincerity and especially the shit that is relatable like your parents fucking up your dreams little by little involuntarily, makes the read longer than it actually is 😔

Parents did quite shitty job of being parents. Granted they hadn't malicious intentions, but still they did quite the damage by being this neglectful. The father expecially by telling her to find a real job (implying her efforts weren't enough and not worthy of consideration) did a huge damage, exactly when she was extremly vulnerable while trying to compose back her life.
I wont talk about recognition of the issues, many people try to put a mask with parents or other close people, and while this doesn't seem the case it's still her POV, so we don't know wethever the depiction are what actually happened or a depiction of her mental state during the events (limited to when she was with the parents , other parts are clearly real). Also for what I understand in Japan there is still a social stigma about mental issue problems. My country still have a quite strong stigma for it, albeit things are better then 10 or 15 years ago, expecially after the pandemic lockdown, so often milder, less evident or intermiottent symptoms aren't diagnosed (like my own anxiety, luckly milder enought to still allow me to function and it's basically only triggered by major events (exams for example) ).
I do hope that her parents didn't know about her anorexy and the load of other symptoms her malnutrition were causing in chapter 1. Becouse if they did know and didn't bring her to the hospital stright away at 38kg wiith unhealing cuts and skin cracks, yellow sweats and co, then they gain some position on the asshole scale

I'm excited for her to have this potentially life changing experience.

Rereading this after a recent reference. Page 37 makes me feel a certain way.

Hmm this definitely reminds me of some things about myself, particularly the food party. "You shouldn't eat!" "Just bear the hunger! Eat tomorrow!" and "We need to save money, don't eat too much!" (Financially anxious). Not to mention not really knowing what I want... I have a goal, but I still don't know if that's what I really want. I've just been following a path my mom put me on. Thinking about it confuses me because I do think it's an interesting goal that I'd want to see realised, but at the same time, I can't help but feel like I'm not really my own person when it comes to achieving it.

I wouldn't group all of those archetypes together (I think some of it is just pdfilia), but at least with tsundere and gyaru, I think it's about expression. Japan is a very conformist society; there are like fashion cultures and trends and whatnot, but everyone is ultimately expected to take the same path down the line. It's probably cathartic to see depictions of strong social expression. It's no different than how we have manic pixie dream girls in the west, for instance. It is a bit more one-dimensional, but that's because of the aforementioned conformist society.

As for the focus on high school, it's escapism from the rigidity of Japanese adult society. I don't know if it's fair to imply that they enjoyed high school by comparing how you wouldn't enjoy reliving high school; I highly doubt mangaka and LN authors had a much better time in high school than you did. In fact, if they did, they wouldn't be so obsessed with writing stories about suicide in high school to be reincarnated in a fantasy world. I think it's more so that Japanese adult society is just even worse than their high school experiences, so they're looking to go back to the last simple time in their life and branch off their life, rather than relive it, hence escapism. There's also a pdfilia aspect but that's all of Japan tbh.

Anyway, we kinda have it a bit lucky in the western world; society is a lot more individualistic, so there's a lot more freedom for expression and spaces. Once we've gotten past the rigidity of school life, you actually get more freedom, unlike in Japan. If you had a bad experience in high school, you have agency to shape it into a better one in the future once you've graduated. The thing you can hope for is the freedom and acceptance of adult society. Sure, there are still exclusionary problems like racism and homophobia and bigotry (I'm not trying to deny yours or others' experiences facing oppression and exclusion, they are serious and problematic), and you can point to niche spaces in East Asia as parallels to the western world. Still, if you've ever lived there, you'll know that it's really not the same, and that it ultimately feels like you have more options, whereas in Japan, it simply gets more rigid, so even if high school was a crap time in your life, it's still the only time you can look to for hope.

So if we were to use a metaphor, life is like a tunnel and hope is light. The tunnel gets brighter for people in the western world, whereas it just gets darker for East Asian society, so even if the tunnel is very dark in the past, it's better to reminisce about the past and escape from there, since at least it looks brighter in comparison.

And on a sidenote, I'm ambivalent to milfs. On one hand, it can seem hot at times, with like a sort of mature and comforting vibe to it. On the other hand, it feels like it's a bit much with how it's fetishizing Oedipus Rex, grooming, and infantilization at times. I guess I'm just repeating what the author said, since that's also more or less how she feels about it lol.

I think it's also escapism. It happens when adult society is more rigid than youth culture. In the US at least, you get more freedom as you grow older (not really financial freedom, but still). Not only do you have access to the broader population, meaning you can find niche spaces with likeminded people, but you can also express your uniqueness. Because of that, it's something to look forward to; you never have to be nostalgic, because the future looks brighter. This has kinda faded in recent years, but even then, it's still there. Like being into drag, for instance.

You don't really see that in East Asian culture; society grows more rigid, meaning the future looks darker for societal misfits. That leads to reminiscing about the past, even if their past wasn't much better than a social misfit's high school life in the US, because it looks brighter than it currently does. And it's not like they simply relive the past as it is; they take the brightest moment of their past and try to reshape it in a way that allows them to escape their life's problems. It's still diverging from the original, dark path, or in other words, it's escapism, creating an imaginary bright future that they can look forward to based from the past, rather than seeking a bright future in the present, because they simply can't find one.
