I guess we can chalk down the "Hey Yumi, let's bang" to hormones.

But I get his hesitation with Maika. You spend a week undoing some bad allegations and then that girl is suddenly all over you? First, it's a victim/savior relationship. One arguably started by Tooyama to begin with. So there's a mix of guilt and realization that this isn't right (in his head, at least. He doesn't realize maika was interested for a long time).

Second, If it was that bad from them just talking, imagine when they hear he went all the way.

Was it ever explained how these 2 got to be fwb? i dont remember a backstory on how they started banging.

in chapter 2, yea. Wasn't anything super complex (at least in the manga). They both like to read, she used the whole "hey that book is at my house, come over" trick. and then she just brought up the seggs. You get a tiny bit of backstory aobut how her mom is always out and about (implications that she's an escort given the late hours but high class look). But we really don't get to know much about Yumi in this adaption atm.

Even in the LN, the two are surprisingly chill about things, realizing that they each got themselves into his life in different ways that normally would've been the province of a single girl. There's some friction as they try to move into each other's spaces but Sakai's sister popping up as someone who's apparently had experience as part of an ongoing throuple and acting as both mediator and agitator in these kids' lives helps keep things manageable until a resolution is reached.

Of course, we won't get all that development here since we're skipping most of the last LN, but things shouldn't go far off the rails, regardless.
