Had to go back and reread the first chapters. Idk, dude was buying condoms between segs at a vending machine and they ran into each other. Made up some BS about getting his (non-existent) big bro condoms, but Uehara knows where he lives and he was pretty far out.

Then next chapter he flags MC down in the library and says how he's such a nice gentle person, and asks about Yumi (similar to how she asked about his sister), even says she's glad they aren't dating. So I guess generic reasons until some backstory pops up.

I don't think it's come up here yet but, basically, she'd been tired of burying her actual personality to hold her friend group together for a while now and, when a campaign of slander and bullying arose against her after dodging a confession from the male alpha figure in the group, he took it upon himself to defend and protect her and even found a way to stop it. She jumped at the chance to get closer to him as a result and find a way out of the social role she'd come to loathe. That was the spark.
