Well, turns out Toma is a man of focus, commitment and sheer fucking will.
Also a man who can speak honestly about his physical attraction to her, but a gentleman too.
Sofia's also a better character than I thought. She's now best girl for this manga in my books, but that's a low bar to clear considering the lack of serious competition, until Maria develops out of her misandrist, sexist beliefs (well I hope she does) that the mystery isekai'd girl instilled into her.
Maybe the mangaka will return Maria to her pre-nerf bust size, now that Sofia's out of the running (apparently). Seriously, if the mangaka wanted to emphasize Sofia's bust, he should have just made them larger than this and kept Maria as she was.

A lot closer to the truth than you think. Note, here, that this character could have been an affectionate busty girl--but the editor "hated" that. So what was she allowed to be in the end? The lustful degenerate you see in the image who exists for gags.
This happens A LOT, and almost always in exactly the same ways, but people like those who endlessly sling "Dumb" stickers at me because they're too simple to form cogent arguments would never catch on--especially since they've already been conditioned to lust after the things mangaka are putting out according to their marching orders, or--in keeping with their simplemindedness--are too busy seeking gratification to think.

i imagine the editor wasn't that cruel in shooting his idea down lol. i've read that particular manga, i get why the editor might have been leery of adding an ara-ara oneesan. that's a trope that's kinda been done to death, while "diabolically horny girl" hasn't yet reached those levels of saturation. plus, regardless of what character archetype they chose, she was probably always gonna end up being a gag character
in regards to maria, i highly doubt an editor was involved in the boob shrinkage

To be frank, I haven't read that manga--so you probably understand things about it that I do not; I am going off logic based on general understandings (the process such writing typically takes) and what one can glean from those omake pages (a friend showed me a few more just like that one, actually).
Therefore, I can give you that one, but with one exception: mangaka and editors are not quite that concerned with the usage of banal/thoroughly overused story elements. For example, keeping a busty girl away from romantic success--specifically if she's got long hair, soft eyes and an appealingly soft character to match--and/or keeping such a character on the side is something that has been done for many, many years now; this was and is still especially done in favor of flatchests and otherwise androgynous female leads. You can also count an absurd number of manga in which the lead female is absolutely outshined in terms of looks and even personality by a side character--frequently have authors paired their male MCs with (at most) remarkably bland girls, especially compared to the side girls who end up as I described. Perhaps this is done to avoid appearing to appeal to just one taste (despite it being logical, traditional, and general beauty), but there are two things to consider regarding that:
・Authors don't worry at all about appearing to excessively appeal to those who would like those bland female girls, and definitely not the kind of people who like undeveloped/androgynous females.
・Authors have this concern with only that aforementioned kind of girl (i.e., the one they keep away from the spotlight) specifically.
If such a girl ends up the female lead, very frequently will something be done to reduce her appeal. This isn't done with the aforementioned alternatives; speaking of those alternatives, I can see that the force of the editor's reply--as you said--was probably exaggerated for comedic effect, but the message was still there: tell me--can you imagine an editor vetoing with such conviction, say, a flat girl or a loli? (On top of all this, big breasts are taboo in this era for reasons outside the scope of this conversation.)
Regarding an editor being the reason for Maria's shrinkage--if not because of an editor, then by whose decision?
All I can think of, aside from an editor's influence, is carelessness on the part of the mangaka and his assistants--but it's sustained for at least a few chapters. You have the fact that you can still compare Maria to her cover artwork and early bust size and see a marked difference, you have the appearance of Sofia, who turns out to be a succubus; Maria was probably diminished in size to emphasize Sofia's sex appeal. (Speaking of sex appeal, JP authors have been--through their narrative choices--pushing the idea that big breasts are not beautiful, but instead inherently lewd and immoral. In that image I showed you, that girl may have ended up such a gag character one way or the other, but it's frequent that you see a busty girl relegated to lust sink status and nothing more, with smaller girls and--most ironically--even lolis being depicted more wholesomely. To explain, a message is sent when an author puts a busty girl in front of the reader and effectively only says about her, "Look at her tits! Dekai..." then puts one of the aforementioned alternatives in front of the reader and effectively says, "This girl is fit for a good relationship with our MC.")
