Why are so many people complaining about character backstory? Developing characters is like half of storytelling. If all you want is action, go watch a YouTube compilation of buildings getting demolished

My biggest gripe isn't that we have chapter long flashback backstories of support characters, it's that all this effort is being put into temporary characters that offer little more then punching bags to the MC before disappearing into the other.
I would much rather this effort be focused on the MC, his childhood friend, the russian loli, and maybe even the team he keeps running into and helping out.
Instead we are given back stories for semi-antagonistic rivals who's main claim to fame is either, mirroring another person's combat style, mimicking others skills and abilities, or directly copying copying their opponents level and stats. What's next, an asshat that steals his personality/identity and tried to destroy his reputation?
