If flowers that can kill you by touch interest you, then you may want to read about the real life tree that can kill you just by being near it.

Was he poisoned in his past life, leading to his death?

@Red225 No, he died through a stab wound. The woman who was ordered to kill him though was given: "A dagger (which was the actual murder weapon), poison (not specified what kind) and a lot of money". Considering that this flower seems to be quite notorious in her home country there is a high probability that she was given the Sumiragi for her assassination. Also if we look at the verse about the flower it could very likely be that the poison that has circulating in the royal palace is the same.
If that is truly the case then there is a high likelihood that the royal court is riddled with spies from Tansy/deserters i.e. it's not just an internal power struggle going on here and there may be people around which were accomplices in Albright's murder.

My problem with this series is the only character I give a crap about is Maria and she doesn't really seem concerned about herself at all. I guess that's why I lost interest

@HDMI1 dayum. I looked up the tree on Wikipedia, and man it's a truly evil tree!

When ingested, the fruit is reportedly "pleasantly sweet" at first, with a subsequent "strange peppery feeling ... gradually progress[ing] to a burning, tearing sensation and tightness of the throat." Symptoms continue to worsen until the patient can "barely swallow solid food because of the excruciating pain and the feeling of a huge obstructing pharyngeal lump.

this poison just sounds like a very strong anti-coagulant.
(read up on this in another manga)
