I read that as two possibilities. Either the kid was being forced to do it, or felt the need to do it despite whatever relationship they had. Now it seems MC completely lacks empathy, seeing as he only acts when it serves his interests all while putting innocents at risk, so that suggests the latter. The kid had to do it, because MC was not the kind of person they thought. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MC deliberately drove a monster into the settled area, just to serve his own purpose of joining the academy. No concern for innocents, i.e. has a lack of empathy, and self-serving. He's a fucking psychopath. Douche-brother got what was coming to him, but MC is a psychopath.

I would suggest either leaving it untranslated as Hitodama, or use something like "Wandering Soul"

People with ASPD can't understand others' feelings. They'll often break rules or make impulsive decisions without feeling guilty for the harm they cause. Neither of those are applicable to the MC as he doesn't exhibit the related traits. So, he's just kind of a dick, at worst. Also, before you say he didn't feel guilty for the harm he caused, no one was harmed as far as this chapter has stated, except his asshole of an older brother but that would qualify as self-defense.

You're wrong. Psychopathy is having no or very low regard for others whether socially or physically, a lack of empathy, manipulation for personal gain, etc.. MC ticks pretty much all the boxes. I mean, the asshole drove a monster into town just for the chance to get into the academy. He literally put everyone he knows at risk, for a very tiny personal gain. He can't learn magic anyway, so joining the academy will get him nothing beyond a satisfied curiosity.

Edit: also, neither psychopath nor sociopath are accepted terms. ASPD is the offical term, which MC most definitely has judging by his actions so far.

I disagree with you there. While it's true that he drive a monster into town, but if he was a true psychopath he wouldn't have cared what was going to happen to the slave girl if she went to his brother's bedroom or even taught her how to use her power. Additionally he wouldn't have felt happy when his oldest brother got him a birthday present. Also, maybe he knew his father was going to be able to repel the monster and he already knew the best way to defeat it since he said he has been practicing for the past year. It takes a lot more than this for a psychologist to label someone as a psychopath or sociopath.

Nope, wrong. Psychopaths may even marry. Psychopaths may live completely normal lives, not even aware of their disorder. A lack of empathy is not the same as not caring at all. What is a slave? Someone who serves, unconditionally. What do psychopaths like? Anything that serves their interests. Helping the slave directly helps himself. Getting a present serves him, so why wouldn't he be happy? Psychopaths can feel most emotions, they just have more control of them.

If what you say is true, that he knew there was no real danger, then that makes him coldly calculating. Which is another tell for ASPD. Even if he was absolutely sure that he could kill the beast, that doesn't mean it's absolutely impossible that there could have been casualties between his dad repelling it and him killing it. The results don't even matter, the fact that he did it despite the risk does. Of course, you are right that a tiny sliver of someone's behaviour isn't enough to diagnose them. But unless his behaviour changes drastically from the present, he's a fucking psychopath.
