@givemersspls Adopting the standard of liberalism and enacting on every facet of the ideology are different things. A nation can assume the broad umbrella term of liberalism, yet still be divided on each social and economic issue just like how every liberal democracy is intended. And among all these conflicting ideas already perpetuated by the system, cultural standards and stigmas can still somehow coexist. Just because they've adopted a Western standard of government, it doesn't mean that their philosophical core should be displaced.
And I think you're calling out the wrong guy here. I never said I disagree with people criticizing on how rigid Japanese society can be. I only have issues with people calling it 'backwards' as compared to the Western standard, because they think that all the peoples of the world should ignore societal and geopolitical differences and somehow exist on the same anthropological timeline.
