His original plan is indeed him learning how to fight without over-relying on brute force, but decided to see Haru and Caro's coordination first while they're on the lower levels. He was also concerned about how Caro would fare in battles now.
It's also not like he can't observe and learn new tactics by watching from the sidelines. Seeing battles farther away lets you see the bigger picture.
