At least in my reading, I took it as him being totally okay with having sex with her in a emotional sense, but that his unwillingness stems instead from the logical understanding that they shouldn't. I just want to say, I wish more manga used to "Fade to black" to imply sex, so many series skip over it with a time skip, but it allows you to have much deeper :3 storylines
