It has ended shortly afterwards and left a broken legacy after 48+ volumes.

Huh, I guess the mangaka wanted to explain why nothing happened after all this time for some reason (as if that kind of thing doesn't happen in more series than you can count) and just went with the worst possible choice.

It seems pretty likely that either Itsuki's grandpa or his missing father was a previous sage, maybe even both of them. The "one and only princess" story his grandpa told him could have been about his own experiences as a sage who fell in love with Hemerocallis the goddess candidate. We can also infer that the flow of time is wonky between the realms, since the "culture" that the sages have introduced are seemingly only from the last 50-100 years or so of Japanese history, while it's been like thousands of years of history in Flower land.

If Itsuki is the child/grandchild of that previous sage and former goddess candidate, it would also explain why he has such incredible divine affinity. It might even explain why his sister was giving him such strangely specific training to become a good man for his own ideal princess. In that case, the moon goddess's intention in manipulating Itsuki's thoughts/memories and guiding him on his path as a Sage is probably to try and forcibly bring back the divinity and genetic diversity that should have been introduced with the completion of the previous goddess ritual, but was lost when the sage and goddess candidate presumably eloped.

Edit: now that I think about it it could be that the moon goddess is trying to prevent what happened with the previous Sage. The previous Sage took the maiden That was supposed to become the goddess back with him and that led to the problem that without new genetic information all the races stopped evolving. It could be that the moon goddess messing with his thought process is an attempt to prevent a repeat of the situation.

second time i get the "took her back to his world" narrative with trust me bro as the source. like i told the other guy (or maybe it was you, don't remember): they only said that the other sage was only interested in one candidate and that she didn't end up becoming the goddess and they got the current one instead. they could've lived out their lives in that world, could've returned to the dude's original world or died prematurely due to disease or whatever the fuck. nobody knows until we see her diary.
