even deserts aren't this dry, you dig a few dozens meters down and you are bound to find water

Am I the only one that had the idea of simply making a short tunnel away from the first hole and then continue digging there?
That way the wind spirit would only need to carry him up for the high of each of the separated holes.
So e.g. if she can carry him up by 20 meters then just dig 15 meters deep then make a short tunnel to about 2 meters away and start digging deeper there for another 15 meters.
You could far deeper than 20 meters in total because the wind spirit would only need to carry you up by 15 meters before you let her rest.

It’s obvious he’s never played mine craft or Terraria. You never dig straight down.

Is this mc retarded?

There was a freaking sea in chapter 2. Why did he risk his life to go to an unknown place in search of water?

He could just desalinated sea water or dig a short distance from the coastline which is guaranteed to have underground water far earlier than random spots of where might have been wetlands.

If he was going to dig this deep, he could have literally dug anywhere. ANYWHERE~~~

Does author not know how ground water works?!

The ground is just drought so making tunnels would be way too dangerous. (collapsing)

I doubt he knows how to make a simple desalination station, either that or not enough wood to support long term living. He barely scrapped twigs to cook his meals. Desalination also has a bad effort:reward ratio. He could try to boil liters and liters of cold seawater and try to barely fuel it with twigs and it would barely give him enough drinking water to last a couple of days. Also, don't think his ember magic could support as fuel since that would cost more mana than the amount of food and water he needs to recover.

tldr; it can not sustain his life for a long term stay.

and about the digging "ANYWHERE", he would not need to dig if there was water in that place where the spirits pointed out as a wetlands region. He went there assuming there is a small chance that there is water. Also if he has to dig, the best chance would be where there is water the first time. water showing there before and calling it wetlands means that the elevation should be low enough to show that much ground water or the water vein flows through there. This translates to less digging than other places.

by the way how feirce was that war? it must have been apocalyptic in scale in order to do that much damage.

@forecast well said.

Pretty sure an aquifer that deep will be under some extreme pressure

The fact that there's a sea right there guarantees the a very low maximum depth you need to dig to reach groundwater. The beneficial groundwater conditions an active wetland could give was already given. Wetlands doesn't guarantee drinkable water at top level and will have to dig for potable water anyway for long term stay. Else he'll keep on having to boil his water supply to keep it clean. Wetland water is the worst type of freshwater for human consumption. He had a choice between where there is water right now vs where there may have been water with the risk of never being able to come back and die should his choice be wrong (which it was). If digging was not an option at all (like in real life without tools), moving somewhere was indeed best.

But the big problem here is that digging clearly was always an option. He would have finished his digging with this giant auger in 1 shot near the sea. He could have solved his water problem in a second instead of traveling for 2 days.

MC is clearly OP, I don't see why he can't just use fire magic to boil salt water. But even if your argument is right about mana, he banked his 2 days worth of water to risk everything instead of boiling just few liters of water to essentially double his supply of water and give himself a way back. Also, you can desalinate with just sun power enough for 1 person to live off of. But argument that he simply didn't know how to desalinate is acceptable.

It's also impossible to dig down without support structures in a dry sand like dirt. So, realistically speaking, MC should have died for his poor choices because he couldn't dig deep or got trapped in a collapsed dirt.

Don't you know that saltwater is denser than freshwater?
That means that when you dig for water near coastal regions you will mostly get saltwater.
His magic power was somewhere below rank D, I doubt an ember can keep up the boiling process of desalination for a liter of water without at least a day. Also the 2 day travel is from his starting point to the wetland not from the beach to the wetland.

Besides wetland water being toxic is due to the pollutants mostly at the top layer, with nothing he can take chances with the one underground.
Comparing that to boiling saltwater until he runs out of energy should be more agreeable. Also in the topic of boiling, for desalination he would need to boil everything up and only capture the steam(the salt stays at the pan and the freshwater is the steam) however for wetlands you only need it to boil enough to kill the bacteria, debris can be remove using cloth or letting it settle in the bottom.

Living off desalination is hard for him because to make that much water using ember he would have to constantly be there to make it. hours and hours sitting to watch liters of water boil only to get a couple of cups is excruciatingly numbing. Not to mention he also has to level up and travel to civilization if he wants food. He can get food in the ocean if he gets strong enough to battle the seamonsters or fish but he would need to cook it too which builds up more need for fuel or magic.

It is not cost effective as a long term solution.
There is better chances of making a well and boiling it then if need be.

Also since he has a magic inventory to store anything he can just store the dirt that falls on top of him. That and the shovel idea he has.
