Maybe the Demon King was the last Hero?
There is a concept in a few other mangas, where the whole thing is a cycle.
The Hero kills the Demon King, becomes the Demon King after a short while, and gets killed by a new Hero. Rinse and repeat.

Assuming a similar concept here, Lugh might be an attempt to break the cycle with a workaround: kill the Hero in the time before they turn into a new Demon King with a non-Hero individual. If you kill the Hero before they kill the Demon King, there is nobody able to kill the Demon King anymore. Wait too long and the Hero turns into a new Demon King that needs a Hero to be killed.
(Note: in this scenario, sealing the Demon King would have been an attempt to freeze the cycle instead of breaking it.)

I don't believe that's the story here, though. The Goddess is way too suspicious in many ways for me to think that she's just trying a good faith attempt to break a Hero/Demon King cycle of the sort.

Is the MC plainly stupid?
He just announced that he received a direct oracle from the Goddess , and he doesn't expect important religious figures to take an interest in him?
isn't that, mc thinking that the religious leader there, is like the religious leaders of our world?

50000 people seems too few to make a fruit that resurrects a demon king.

Maybe they need several, otherwise it seems like 50,000 people would easily reached by a hoarde of demons.

Maybe that’s why the revival of the demon king is seemingly inevitable, it’s a fairly low bar and it’s assumed there’s no way to prevent the demon king for long.

Thank you for the translation, @FlamingSquid01, but one error: sparring vs sparing. Sparring is the present participle of spar, when you practise fighting; sparing is the present participle of spare, when you leave something unharmed.

That would possibly be even worse.
This is a world where magic, gods (at least one), heroes and demon kings are demonstrably real.
Religion is obviously going to be different, and he has already spent enough time there to know it.
He also had a very clear and personal encounter with the Goddess. (Not something vague like "a dream", "a feeling" or "a personal conviction", which are the best things you can get in real life.) Then was reincarnated with magic powers.

Also, if you declare that you receive an oracle in our world, you have a (tiny) chance to attract religious attention.
It's not certain, but don't be surprised if it happens.
(For example, the catholic church has official investigators to validate miracle claims. Granted, they won't examine every single little claim... because even they have standards... but they do have a process for this. So don't be surprised if you make a credible claim of divine intervention and catholic priests attempt to contact you.)

In this case, his claim is pretty credible. He solved a problem that has plagued humanity for a long time and was supposed to require a single special individual blessed by the Goddess. So pretending that this solution was divinely inspired has credibility. (Although, funny enough, he half-lied about it.)

The Goddess gives me that "Knife pressed up against your throat." vibe with that smile.
Considering she's just going to annihilate the planet if Lugh fails it's more of a promise than a vibe.

So all the demons are trying to revive their lord but snake lady seems to be working towards her own goal. My guess is that she’s either trying to revive the demon lord herself (and take all the credit) or this entire story is a sack of bull and the actual method to revive the demon lord is to kill all the demons. Wouldn’t put it past the goddess to spread some misinformation
On the other hand, if she's NOT lying about what she is, she does have a vested interest in stopping the Demon Lord, and would at least make sure the information on how to stop him was real.
Otherwise, if sacrificing a lot of people is enough to create this fruit and revive the Demon Lord, why track these specific demons who could be just a few out of many entities who can make these sacrifices? Or are they simply the only ones who can turn these sacrifices into the fruit? Or the only ones who can use the fruit at the end?
So many important details have been left out... and it's definitely suspicious.
It feels more like these Demons are the only ones present. There are 8 Demons working to revive 1 Demon Lord. There might be other sentient monsters, but they all work for these 8 Demons, and are not themselves demons.

I agree that something is fishy. These statues are too convenient.
It's like the demons are actually tools of the Goddess. Like, say, seals on the Demon King, who will then be revived once the seals (demons) are lifted (killed).

I’m calling it now: the goddess IS the demon lord, or at least is closely related in some way. That’s why the statues are in the room for the goddess, that’s why she’s directing everything, that’s why she’s insistent on killing off The Hero. I think something with Epona is able to harm/kill her.

Also possible: she’s not the demon lord, and it’s all a setup to kill Epona still anyway. Again, she needs her dead for some reason and the demon lord stuff is a smoke screen to make that happen.

If I’m right, then that demon woman will be the first clue to the party what’s really going on. Maybe she’s less interested in bringing back the demon lord and more interested in taking down the goddess and she allies with them for that.

Piggybacking off of that idea;
I mean… maybe the goddess is actually a demon lord who can isekai people and who created this religion to set themselves up as a goddess for their resurrection
My bet is on the goddess being some kind of security system for some thing else. After Lugh left, she stopped acting as if she had emotions and was more like an automata than a living being.

That priestess looking like her has me extremely suspicious.

Can't say I trust that system in the least - they can literally track the demons' state, and the statues light up when they die; that's literally screaming that they're being energized!
Thanks for the translations, as always!

Now I believe the Venus/Capitol Cult Demon Lord theory. I bet hunting them all returns their souls to their statues in the demon lord shrine that is conveniently in the Capitol guarded in secret.

What I don't get is how Lugh is supposed to kill Epona after she kills the Demon Lord to prevent her from killing Venus if she is the Demon Lord, unless she somehow has a false Demon Lord lined up to take the fall.

Might just be an entire setup, honestly. It could all be a lie to bring the world down; imagine if, after all demons have been returned to energized statues, the Hero becomes the last key needed to bring about a larger calamity.
Like demons, they're blessed with abnormal amounts of power, and just like a matchup between Ghost types, become their bane. Wouldn't be surprised if the energy can be collected in the same manner, but I've got no clue what the endgame is there!

Rereading some of the early chapters gave me the impression she was like a lazy brat playing with a toy, but now Lugh's definitely playing a dangerous game...
