I get the spawning point thing but doesn't these monsters come from the ocean. So shouldn't she have built her tower on the spawner that's on the ocean?
It's more controlled spawn. You build a tower with a 2 by 2 space in the middle way up high build a large room at the top put water in specific spaces and opened trap doors around where the mobs spawn. Do to the mobs AI they think opened trap doors (that they can fall through) are closed walk into what they think is solid ground fall into the flowing water which pushes them into the open space in the middle dropping them down to the bottom either gravely wounding them or killing them outright depending on how you want it to work. There are better designs, but what she built is the spitting image of the basic mob grinder.
