Japanese romcom authors are all sadists, I guess. They know what they're doing. We're used to it so we know what they're doing. They make a boy or girl for the sole purpose of obliterating that kid's heart after they've outlived their usefulness as a cockblocker or whatever other form of story padding they might be doing. The sadism bit doesn't even come into play from just that, because I mean fuck it these characters are all fictional I guess torturing them doesn't really count on its own. That bit is all making the kid likable to the audience, people even end up preferring them over the main heroine sometimes, so we can suffer the entire time knowing how hard they're gonna get slammed.
