That's just an official term used by governments such as Canada so they can be both thorough and succinct as possible when referring to inclusiveness in policies, and its primarily only used in those cases (the guy you're replying to notwithstanding). To my understanding, most people still only use LGBTQ+.

That might just be a Japanese thing. They tend not to have physical comfort as much as in the US, especially with the opposing gender.
