Yep here comes the social influence. Even though she WANTS to trust him, society's and her own upbringing standards creeps on her despite her.
I'm actually glad the author decided to go this route.
I fundamentally agree with you, but I find it kitschy when people blame the ultra-abstract "society"-- at least with no further specificity.
She's completely out of her depth-- she has zero real experience with men, or intimacy. She doesn't even have any preliminary building blocks for the sake of those things. This is already barely a "real" thing to her, because she's never experienced anything like it herself. She's preoccupied with purity, and she
possibly loathes the idea of having to compete with other women or otherwise potentially being compared to them. Who knows what came first-- was said preoccupation mostly intrinsic to her to begin with, able to be reinforced by the media she gravitated towards and the widespread contradiction in attitudes towards sex and rape? Or was it acquired from the outside in the first place?
It doesn't especially matter, because her failure to resolve her cognitive dissonance in the "right" way is regardless on her head, and is going to cause harm.
She can be held accountable for the mental battle she lost-- "society" can't.
A number of identities can be held responsible, but "society" can't.
The protocols of institutions (e.g. legal, educational), and the people who fashioned and/or enforced them can be blamed. "Society" can't-- definitely not in a way that matters.
Even an entire village, or town, could somewhat be altogether held accountable... but there's obviously no such group awareness in this case, or in most of real life. It's definitely a widespread thought, but not among people that have a particularly strong sense of responsibility to each other.
All that said, I second your praise of the mangaka. I was expecting this to be less dimensional than it actually ended up being. What she'll do next is idiotic, but she'll be at least slightly sympathetic.
atleast his homies really care toward kaede even if he got rejected, he still has true friends around.
