He's recovered enough to suss out social cues on an individual basis rather than simply reacting to gender more broadly. He might still get hurt because he doesn't have much experience with his lack of fear not necessarily being the same as falling in love, but maybe this is a hurt he needs to discover the difference.

I think some of you missed the point what she said. She rejected him... sure what she said was weird, but at least in my opinion she rejected him and the idea of being with him. Also she knows something bad happened to him and she whatever it was WAS REALLY BAD. That's why the MC's heart aches, because he knows he just got rejected. Even it was indirect.
