Not a novel reader for this one, but I have my theory. Basically Lyle doesn't feel he deserves her support and feels he is indebted to her, and her long-term unwavering support has made it difficult for him to break out of that mindset. Having new people willing to show that kind of dedication towards him will hopefully help him realize he deserves it. Or something like that.
