Well, shit, that's a lot to take in. I thought that was Anthony at the end at first but that's Lewis isn't it? Really happy Louise is doing her best to avoid unification, at least, she's my personal favorite of the five debutants.

Damn! We kind of suspect but here we go, that's what is going on "in the shadows". Now we're kicking into serious royal/noble politics multi-way power struggle backstabbing games, with a coup against the GGF being enacted under their noses. Great stuff. And for Kate, both risk and opportunity, nothing like the chaos of that to give an underdog chances they would never get otherwise.

Still to be seem what Anthony/Christopher's goal behind it is too. Just seize power themselves? Do they see it as the only way to enact reform? See value in protecting those who exist and want a balance, even if they must be ruthless about it? And Kate still has her secret wildcard as a unified-from-birth, and also the true legitimate heir of the Mirrors Family.

This is a glorious wheels within wheels tale.

Considering how the coffee only has a minor effect on the shadows themselves (which has been shown before and Louise also states in this chapter) and how mind control of the face via coffee is part of the "normal" operation of the Shadow House and the ritual:

1. Brainwashing shadows might be hard / impossible via soot power.

2. There might be more to the whole unification than "the shadow controls the body, the face disappears". Maybe the thoughts of the Face actually have more influence on the final product than previously assumed. Then that could be the way the great grandfather keeps control over all the adults (who as shadows should be relatively immune to brainwashing via coffee), and what Lewis and Christopher/Anthony intend to ursurp here.

3. Crack theory, building on that: Since the ritual also tries to reinforce that the face is only a vessel and that merging is in the instinct of the shadow, maybe thats also not actually the truth and just a result of the brainwashing. Could be that unification doesn't only have to result in "both shadow and face die" and "the shadow subsumes the face".

If I recall correctly it roughly equates to ending around chapter 82. I remember disagreeing with the choice to try and end the season on an upbeat/determined note rather than a few chapters back.
