I used to think great grandfather was going to be some kind of final boss character, but the talk about him possibly being maintained by some kind of soot power just kept going, and now we have some crumbs that seem to point in that direction. Even Kate and the others think he's unnatural and not just one of the other unified shadow adults.
I guess it's just about time this mystery is handled now, it's also harder for me to see how would they confront Anthony at this point when he's at the peak of his (political) power. They need something to challenge his control, and solving this mystery seems to be the key to do it.
Side note, I find it interesting that the two actual adults are grouped in the same panel. Lou, Ram and Shirley are also grouped in another panel, but Louise doesn't seem to have turned into a morph like Shirley.
