I don’t know what kind of cushy childhood you had, but if you roughhouse with siblings enough, you learn how not to split your head open when you get knocked down.

As far as this test, it’s pretty inconsistent. I question this guy’s mental stability and good intentions. After making it a point of stressing that he doesn’t want anyone to get hurt (and giving his subordinates branches to fight with), he ambushed her and the draws an actual weapon on her. Does he mean to harm her? I don’t know (though I wouldn’t put it past him to have decided ahead of time, hoping his men would beat her up a bit so he could reject her). But his sudden shift in demeanor is suspect.

Plus, I tend to think of battlefield mages as human-sized artillery units. You usually expect artillery to have to set up ahead of time and have their actions planned out in order to be the most effective—which is exactly what she did. You don’t typically expect your artillery units to be dealing with sneak attacks and on-the-fly maneuvers.

Yeah and that mindset is why both you and the captain is a failure.

She is literally a recruit, you could easily train her into the "right" mindset.
No one in their right mind is going to expect people to be perfect soldiers when they join the army.
Sure you could use the excuse that you don´t take newbies into the elite force, but at that point, there was never a chance for her to join anyway.

unlike most others who would need to train into the mindset AND learn the skills to be strong enough.
She could just train on mindset alone and she would be a great asset to the country.

Not to mention he broke his own rules by interfering with the "test"
What ? did you expect her to use fireballs and literally kill them to prove a point, she had no reason to attack the captain either?
And that's ignoring the fact he could just have told her in words about her flaws instead of being an asshole about it.
There was literally no reason to actually attack her beyond testing if she was paying attention to her surroundings despite him indirectly telling her she did not need to...
