@bushwhacker2k they don't put enough effort into them to mix them into the group and usually they are just fuck goofs. No chemistry with the girls and generally annoys the mc.

@UltimateAdrian20 - I wouldn't call Iris a loli. She has breasts, she is millenia old, and she looks like she is the same age as our young teenage protagonists. While we're at it, Ruri and Arma aren't loli either.

@firefish5000 , @rockoford , @mage_goo - isekai is a type of beginning of the story, meant to give the audience an instant relatable character, and the author an easy way to give exposition (no infodump at the beginning, can just refer to tropes for easy explanation of common elements).
There are stories where MC uses his modern-world background a lot, but I think it should be a separate tag. In Russia we call this "прогрессорство" ("progressorship"), named after people in a famous sci-fi setting who make underdeveloped worlds advance and join the interstellar community. This kind of story can be done with just a very learned protagonist like Demon King from Maoyuu Maou Yuusha.

I agree that isekai isn't really a genre (unless it is, like in Gate). But there is a lot of tags that aren't really a genre. Like "fantasy". "Sci-fi" can be both a genre and a setting. And so on.

@flannan TBH, the concept of genre alludes me at this point.

But I am sure that if isekai is a genre, it is a subgenre of fantasy (unless we are looking at some space travel thing, which I still believe can fall into the category of isekai. Though my cruddy Christmas story was voted to be isekai by only ~60% of readers)

And I agree in general with what you said. The 'isekai' tidbit is usualy added in just to make it more relatable. Making world building easier could be a small bonus... but honestly, most works I read don't utilize that, both the high end works and lower rated crap.
In the end, they just describe everything in an infodump fashion, with the only difference being 'in this world/in this game/in this novel' being prepended to the description.
Then they never mention it again~~~

IDR what this thread was about.... Wasn't this guy a time leap? How did we get on the topic of isekai anyways?

If anyone wants some recs for shojou romance/otome game/villainess isekai (and other works I liked), click my profile. Some works only have official translations, but they are noted in my profile desc.

You arent wrong, but I guess thats the problem I have with it. There are mangas that do it right and it makes sense(Some of my favs to read actually), but should we just accept a lazy start? I mean if you're already going through all the trouble of writting a whole detailed story/manga then why be lazy at just the start?
I feel that there are plenty of ways to explain powers/plot/setting/relations without it being isekai.
That being said Im probably just being picky haha.
I love the new gate btw

@rockoford - it's the Japanese way. Sustained effort without much ability or planning.
Also, beginning is the most important part. If you can't grab readers' attention at the start, the readers are unlikely to read the rest. Personally I think In Medias Res is the right way to start, but I understand that it's a high-level technique not all authors can do.

True, the most important part to generate interest/ potential revenue to continue the series. Which the worst thing is when a series you like gets dropped

@firefish5000 Isekai normally get brought up in discussion with reincarnation stories because they serve the same purpose when it comes to making your character super overpowered real quick. Alot of the time the Dungeness are interchangeable.

The MC will be invincible until an enemy invents a nullify ass pull spell.

@sadisticsaiyan Haha, I'd have dropped this if Iris hadn't turned into a human form. The chapter was super painful to read before the ending with her. The author can't write fights worth a shit. It's always nothing but one ass pull after another. No matter what happens, it's always according to the MC's plans, and he has exactly the perfect spell to counter everything imaginable and unimaginable. The retcon style of writing the fights makes them even more disgusting. Any kind of foreshadowing is utterly beyond the capabilities of the author.
