It makes perfect sense, if you think about it. The Hero has to depend on the tutorial NPC-the Guide. When you apply this to a whole childhood of development and personality-influencing, a complex is the best case scenario.
And on that topic, I'm gonna assume that the protection of Guide is responsible for Gideon's charisma. He's the nurturer, the silent aide, the "guide". He wouldn't be much of a Guide if he couldn't get people to trust him or he didn't have the wisdom to answer their anxieties when they feel lost.
