After giving this a reread, I think the most sickening thing about this story of war and magic, is how arbitrarily the generals use their units as baits in grander strategems.
I.E: We see quite often the higher-ups make very logical, very efficient decisions, to "draw the enemy attack with a small group, and then..." -- but does that "small group" even know they're sent out to their deaths, with no victory in mind at all?
Those "2000 people on our side died today" updates are incredibly grim, when you observe it through that lens.
Those weren't just some RTS units that you pump out of a factory, those were people, who surely didn't think their whole lives lead up to being served as bait, as part of a tactic from up top.
It's pretty easy to ignore that part, and just focus on the flow of action, but I appreciate it.
