Unfortunately, it is kinda common for victims of abuse to blame themselves for the issues. It is part of what makes abusive relationships so terrible and hard to help.

And in this case, seems like these guys bullied him already while he was on Earth and powerless, which caused some trauma. Thus why he has to psych himself up, that he is not as weak as last time they met.
